Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
Golf Fellow is a golf coaching app. This policy explains what personal data the app collects, why, who processes it on our behalf, and what rights you have under the GDPR and Icelandic Act no. 90/2018.
1. Controller
The data controller is Björn Jóhannsson, Iceland. Privacy enquiries: privacy@golffelaginn.app.
2. What we collect
Account
- Email address and the identifier from your sign-in provider (Apple or Google).
- The name you choose to display.
Golf profile and play data
- Handicap, target handicap, club, handedness.
- Rounds, hole-by-hole scores, courses played, your clubs and their distances.
- Practice sessions you log.
Location during a live round
When you play a live round and mark a shot in the app, we ask for precise location to calculate distances and draw the map — and we store it with your round on our server, not only on your phone. If you use Golf Fellow on Apple Watch, the watch records the same shot marks and sends them straight to our server, independently of the phone. Your friends never see these shot marks (see section 3). When the app fetches weather, it uses the course's public coordinates — never your own position.
Apple Watch motion data
- If you play with the watch, it records a short window of accelerometer and gyroscope data (about half a second either side) around each detected swing, to improve the watch's stroke detection.
- This data is visible only to you, never appears anywhere in the app, and is never shared with anyone — it exists only to tune the detector.
Content you upload
- Scorecard photos and screenshots.
- Export files (such as Trackman CSVs).
- Videos of your swing.
App usage
- We measure how the app is used (for example, which screens people open) with PostHog, hosted in Europe, and attach a handful of non-identifying properties such as subscription tier and handicap. This data is tagged with a random identifier — never your name or email — and never includes anything you write or upload.
- For a small sample of sessions (about 1 in 10) we also record a session replay to see how a screen actually behaves. Text and images are automatically masked in that recording, and it stops entirely while you are playing a live round.
- We do not use this data for advertising and do not share it across other apps.
Purchases
- Subscription status and swing-analysis credit balance.
- We never see card details — Apple processes payment and only tells us whether a purchase succeeded.
Device and notifications
- A push notification token if you enable notifications.
- If you send a bug report from the app, it includes device details, your email address and, if you choose, a screenshot.
Coach interest form (the website)
- If you sign up at golffellow.app/coaches we keep what you type into the form: your name, club, email and/or phone number, roughly how many golfers you coach, your simulator, your note, and the fact that you ticked the consent box. To keep out spam we also keep a salted hash of your IP address; the IP address itself is never stored.
- It has one purpose: contacting you about the coach pilot. The legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- A sign-up opens an item in our private issue tracker on GitHub with your name and club, plus your answers about client numbers, simulator and your note. Your email and phone number never go there.
- The sign-up is deleted when the pilot ends, or sooner if you ask.
Beta sign-up form (the website)
- If you sign up on the home page for a TestFlight invite, we keep your name, the email the invite should go to, your country if you give it, and any other note, along with the fact that you ticked the consent box. To keep out spam we also keep a salted hash of your IP address; the IP address itself is never stored.
- It has two purposes: sending you a TestFlight invite and letting you know about beta updates. The legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- A sign-up opens an item in our private issue tracker on GitHub with your name, country and note. Your email never goes there — it is used directly to add you in TestFlight.
- The sign-up is deleted when the beta ends, or sooner if you ask.
3. Sharing with other golfers
- By default, other golfers can find you in search by name, club or mutual friends. You can hide yourself from search in "Edit profile" ("Hide me from search").
- A stranger who finds you in search sees only your name, club and mutual-friend count — never your photo or handicap.
- Once you are friends, sharing is on by default: your name, photo, club, handicap and which data providers you're connected to, plus your rounds — course, date and score — along with averages on courses you've both played, drills you both have in My Drills, and practice focuses you've passed. You can turn this off in "Edit profile".
- Never shared with friends: hole-by-hole detail, shot location data, swing videos, or anything Fellow has written about you.
- A coach. If you join a coach's group through an invite link, your coach sees: your name, club and handicap; your rounds hole by hole; your simulator and range sessions; your practice sessions and how they went; and drills the coach assigns you. A coach never sees anything Fellow has written about you, and other members of the group see nothing about you. You agree to this on the screen the link opens, and you can leave the group at any time under "Me" — your coach stops seeing your data immediately. Coaches handle payment for their coaching themselves, outside the app.
4. Scorecard links you share
When you finish a round with a playing partner who doesn't have the app, you can create a link that shows the course, date, hole-by-hole score and the name of whoever recorded the round — nothing else. Anyone who has the link can open it, since the link itself is the credential. It expires after 30 days, stops working as soon as someone claims the round, and is deleted if the round itself is deleted.
5. Notifications
If you enable push notifications, we may send you notifications about:
- new friend requests and when they're accepted,
- a friend who shares with you starting or finishing a round, or scoring a notable hole,
- who won the monthly leaderboard among the friends who share it with you,
- a reminder when your next practice session is due,
- and when Fellow has written about a practice session you logged.

7. Who processes your data
We never sell personal data. These processors act on our behalf:
| Service | What it receives |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Account, play data — including shot marks and location from live rounds — and uploaded content. The Apple Watch app connects to the same database directly when you play with the watch. |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Frames from swing videos, scorecard images and statistics from your rounds, in order to produce the analysis. Never your precise location. |
| PostHog | Usage data tagged with a random identifier, and session replay for a small sample of sessions — hosted in Europe |
| Fly.io | Server-side swing video processing |
| RevenueCat and Apple | Purchase and subscription state |
| Expo | Push notifications, if you enable them |
| GitHub | Only if you submit a bug report from the app, sign up as a coach on the website, or sign up on the beta waitlist — then your name, club/country and answers, never your email or phone |
| GolfBox / GSÍ | Only if you connect your account, to fetch your own handicap |
| Trackman | Only if you connect your account |
| Open-Meteo | The course's coordinates for a wind reading — no data about you |
8. Transfers outside the EEA
Some processors are located outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Such transfers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard.
9. Retention
- Account data is kept while your account is active.
- You can delete your account from inside the app; this deletes your data, including rounds, shot marks, watch motion data, videos and uploaded content.
- Scorecard links you share expire automatically after 30 days.
- Bug reports you send may persist in our issue tracker on GitHub as part of the app's defect history.
- Coach interest sign-ups are deleted when the coach pilot ends, or sooner if you ask.
- Beta sign-ups are deleted when the beta ends, or sooner if you ask.
10. Your rights
You have the right to access your data, correct it, have it erased, restrict or object to processing, receive it in a portable form, and withdraw consent at any time. Contact privacy@golffelaginn.app. You may also lodge a complaint with the Icelandic Data Protection Authority, Persónuvernd (personuvernd.is).
11. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
12. Changes
If this policy changes we update the date at the top. Material changes will be announced in the app.
